Before you go

Plan your trip

  • Visa and entry

Most visitors need a visa; apply online before you travel. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so one visa covers both. The East Africa Tourist Visa does not include Tanzania.

    Official e-Visa portal
  • Mandatory travel insurance

From 1 October 2026 foreign visitors to mainland Tanzania must buy US$44 inbound insurance from NIC (Zanzibar has required ZIC cover since October 2024). One policy covers both and lasts 92 days. Residents of EAC and SADC countries are exempt.

    NIC inbound insurance
  • Health

You need a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from, or transit through, a country with yellow fever risk, including Kenya and Uganda. Ask a travel clinic about malaria prevention; Tanzania also screens arrivals during regional Ebola outbreaks.

  • Getting around

Northern safaris start from Arusha and Kilimanjaro Airport; southern and western parks and Zanzibar are reached from Dar es Salaam. Light aircraft link the parks, and fast ferries run from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar.

Who to travel with

Tanzania's tour operators, guides and mountain outfitters need a TALA licence from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. Until our Tanzania operator register is connected, our team matches each quote request with licensed operators by hand.
