Lake
A highland lake of islands and terraced hills.
Lake Bunyonyi lies at about 1,960 m in the hills near Kabale. Its name means "place of many little birds", and its winding shores hold dozens of islands.
Steep terraced farms rise from the water, and lodges, campsites and island retreats make it a favourite place to rest before or after gorilla tracking in Bwindi or Mgahinga.
Islands such as Akampene (Punishment Island) carry stories of Bakiga history, and canoe trips pass fishing villages and birdlife.
Paddle a dugout canoe between the islands.
Stay on an island lodge or campsite.
Hike the terraced ridges for views over the lake.
Hired from lodges or local boat operators.
With local guides.
Kingfishers, cranes, weavers and more.
Pleasant all year; nights are cool at this altitude.
There is no entry fee for the lake. Boats, canoes and guides are priced by lodges and local operators.
About 414 km on tarmac to Kabale, then about 8 km to the lakeshore.
Often combined with gorilla tracking in the south of Bwindi.
