Kilwa Kisiwani was one of the richest towns on the East African coast from the 13th to the 16th century, controlling trade in gold and ivory. With nearby Songo Mnara it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
Its ruins include the Great Mosque, the cliff-top Husuni Kubwa palace and the Gereza fort, rebuilt by the Portuguese and later the Omanis. Songo Mnara has some of the best-preserved Swahili town ruins.
