Museum and royal palace
A royal palace, a 1930s king's residence and long-horned Inyambo cattle.
Nyanza was the royal capital of the Kingdom of Rwanda. The King's Palace Museum at Rukari recreates the traditional royal compound, with a great thatched palace, its tall reed fences and smaller houses for milk and beer.
Next to it stands the Western-style palace built in the 1930s for Mwami Mutara III Rudahigwa, now showing the history of the monarchy.
The museum also keeps a herd of Inyambo, the royal cattle bred for their huge horns. Their handlers sing traditional songs to them, and the herd's parade is one of the museum's highlights.
