The Ethnographic Museum in Huye (formerly Butare), built with Belgian support and opened in the late 1980s, holds one of the finest ethnographic collections in East Africa.

Its galleries trace Rwanda's geology and history, farming and herding, hunting, crafts, architecture, clothing, music, games and traditional beliefs. A full-size traditional house and royal regalia are among the highlights.

The museum also offers craft experiences, and visitors can watch traditional dance. Huye itself is home to the University of Rwanda's main campus and is a good overnight stop between Kigali and Nyungwe.
