UTC Elgon was founded in 1931 as a technical school and artisan training centre for First World War veterans. It became Elgon Technical Institute in 1972, offering technical certificate courses in engineering crafts.
In 1984 it was upgraded to a tertiary institution, Uganda Technical College, offering diploma courses in engineering fields alongside craft courses. The college plans to become a centre of excellence in construction trades.
