Uganda Management Institute (UMI) started on 7 October 1969 as the Institute of Public Administration, mandated to train public servants and build management capacity in the public service.
In 2004 an act of Parliament made UMI a degree-granting institution while it kept its role of running short courses, certificates and diplomas. It is organised in four schools and has branches in Gulu, Mbale and Mbarara.
