A university shaped by heritage, learning and research
Makerere began as a technical school in 1922 and became an independent university in 1970. Today its official academic structure brings together nine colleges and two standalone schools, supporting undergraduate, graduate and doctoral study.
The university describes research and innovation as central to its mission, with work spanning technology, medicine, agriculture, business, natural sciences and the social sciences. Its main campus sits on Makerere Hill, north of Kampala's city centre.
