The idea of Kabale University was born in 1995 under the Kigezi Development Association. It opened in 2002 with 42 students as a not-for-profit community university owned by the people of Kigezi, obtained its charter in 2014 and became a public university in July 2015.
Its main campus sits on 50 acres on Kikungiri Hill, about a kilometre off the Kabale–Katuna–Kigali highway, with a second campus in Nyabikoni. Its location attracts students from Uganda and from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo and South Sudan.
